Surge Protector Home Theater

A common challenge with Canadian home theater systems is controlling power source and organizing your wiring. One bad voltage spike can cause extensive damage to the whole system, and to make it worse, not all your gadgets may be covered by manufacturer’s warranties. This is why it’s important to invest in a good home theater surge protector to keep your system running.

A surge protector regulates incoming voltage to prevent shock in case of voltage spikes. Spikes may occur from a variety of causes, including lightning strikes, power outages, and short circuits. When a large amount of voltage enters your system, it can basically fry the circuitry and render your device useless.

Surge protectors can be plugged up to one or several devices. The latter is used for home theater power protection because it protects all your components at once. Most models will work with standard Canadian home theater systems and even offer surge protection for the rest of the house. A ‘whole house’ surge protector will cost from $150 to $300 and should be installed in your power meter by a professional electrician.

When choosing surge protectors, look for one with a low clamping voltage. This is the level at which the protector starts blocking the surge; the lower its threshold, the better you’ll be protected. Most Canadian home theater systems can get by with a clamping voltage of 330 or less.
