Home Theater Window Treatments
When building a home theater, one of the first things you’ll want to do is block out light. Ambient light (such as sunlight coming in from the windows) can create glare and ruin your viewing experience. That’s why the ideal home theater room is a windowless one. However, few Canadian home theater owners have such a room in the house. Unless you’re willing to spend on a custom room, home theater window treatments are your best alternative.
Many Canadian home theater stores carry specially made drapes designed to completely keep out light. The best home theater curtains are made of thick, dark velvet. Besides being efficient light-blockers, they also add to that authentic theater feel. If you’re on a tight budget, you can go for cheaper cotton drapes, although you’ll need more layers to achieve the same efficiency as velvet.
Home theater drapes may be manually or electronically controlled. Motorized home theater curtains certainly make an impressive picture, but be prepared to spend $300 or more on a good quality set. If you do decide to go electronic, make sure your Canadian home theater supplier offers service warranties.
Your curtains should be slightly bigger than your window size. Light can still come in through the sides, so make sure there’s enough extra fabric to keep it out. Choose a curtain that covers at least six inches of the wall on the bottom, left and right sides of the window.
